Man With Alzheimer’s Gets Memory Back ONLY When Singing With Son

Simon “Mac” McDermott, 40, is driving around the city with his father, Ted.  Ted is 79 and has Alzheimer’s disease. Ted was diagnosed with dementia in 2013.  He can’t remember anything.

That is until Simon and Ted start singing!  Amazingly, music seems to “bring him back,” albeit briefly.

This is crazy to me.  My wife’s grandfather suffers from the same ailment.  I’m not sure if he remembers who I am every time I see him, especially since I see him only a few times a year.  It’s crazy how someone’s mind works, or doesn’t work for that matter.  I don’t experience it quite like my wife, or her family, but I can tell you he told us the same story about being in Antarctica twice within 2 minutes.   It’s amazing what he remembers and doesn’t remember.

In Ted’s case, he was a singer and entertainer all his life, performing for audiences across England. Even after he got married and had kids, Ted continued to sing.  Looks like that is still happening to this day, actually!
