Fans have been waiting a long time for Kenny Chesney’s Cosmic Hallelujah album; originally due in July, he pushed the album back to October 28 to accommodate a duet with P!nk. But now the album’s here; here are our five favorite songs from Chesney’s latest.
“Trip Around the Sun”: Although Kenny’s songs seem tailor made for summer, after months of this election season, it’s comforting to hear our favorite country beach-lover singing “I ain’t gonna over think or over analyze tonight.” No matter who is elected to the Oval Office, in Kenny’s world, we can all be grateful that we’re still here. “So let’s drink another beer, here’s to another year, let’s take another crazy trip around the sun.”
“Setting the World on Fire (featuring P!nk)”: It was worth the wait. Yes, duets between country guys and ladies from the world of top 40 seems to be a bit of the rage today (think of recent duets between Brad Paisley and Demi Lovato, Dierks Bentley and Elle King, and, well, Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani). But P!nk was a really surprising choice, and an inspired one. She’s comfortable in several genres, evidenced by her past collaborations with Eminem, Tim Armstrong of Rancid and Nate Ruess of fun. and the Indigo Girls and it seems like she’s totally at home in country music as well.
“Bucket” : “I made a bucket list, changed the ‘b’ to an ‘f.'” It’s one of the best anthems since “Take This Job and Shove It.”
“Bar at the End of the World”: Kenny’s concerts are jam-packed with anthems, but he’ll probably have to make room for this one. “There ain’t no empty glasses/They’re playing ‘Drift Away.’/That’s where the magic happens/back up in that little bay.”
“Some Town Somewhere”: The album’s original title track, it shows that, despite the fact that Chesney can probably buy his own beach resorts, he hasn’t forgotten where he came from. “We’re all born to be free/we’re all born to be great/We’re all looking for the Hollywood sign/and tryin’ to find the interstate,” is something that lots of people from small towns can relate to.
