Last night at the 2016 BMI Country Awards Kenny Chesney was this year’s President’s Award recipient. Kenny now joins P!nk, Taylor Swift, Adam Levine, Willie Nelson, Brooks & Dunn, and Gloria and Emilio Estefan in being recognized for a “prolific songwriting career.”
Kenny watched and listened to tributes from Keith Urban, Dean Dillon and Eric Church. Keith shared this story…which by the way made me tear up.
Keith told the crowd, recalling an opening run with Chesney in the early 2000s after a second stint in rehab. Nervous about maintaining his sobriety, Urban had largely kept to himself. “About a week went by and I got word that Kenny was like, ‘What’s wrong with this Keith Urban guy? He just sits on his bus all day; doesn’t come say hi, doesn’t hang out. What the hell?'” Urban sought Chesney out. “I went over to Kenny’s bus and we sat down and had a heart to heart about what I was going through,” Urban said, smiling at Chesney. “You were a friend right from that moment and it’s stayed that way ever since. I love you Kenny.” Urban then performed an acoustic version of “I Go Back.”
Awe so incredibly sweet.
