Need Inspiration… Read This!

This past Sunday was the New York City Marathon and the last person to cross the finish line was Jonathan Mendes.  Jonathan is 96 YEARS OLD!  : )  btw… this was the 16th marathon he has completed.   The course thru the city was 26.2 miles and it took Jonathan 11 hours and 23 minutes to complete it.

Mendes… World War II veteran…bomber in the Marines and flew more than 100 missions and 70 in the Korean War… is thought to be the oldest finisher in the New York City Marathon’s history… unofficially.   It was “unofficial” because the clock stopped tracking runners 45 minutes before he crossed the finish line.

Jonathan said….”You have to have goals in life. They don’t have to be important. But at this stage I’ve done it all. I’ve skied all over the world. I’ve canoed the great rivers of the world. I flew dive-bombers for the Marine Corps in World War II, and jet fighter attack planes in Korea. And I never got hurt, so I don’t have any bad memories.”

Oh and get this…. Jon says … after the race… he had a drink of scotch… does that every day at 4:00 p.m. btw.

“The key to living this long is a shot of whiskey a day and a good woman… in that order.”  – Jonathan Mendes

Congratulations Mr Jonathan Mendes!   Thank you for your service and inspiration.   You are my hero! – Darlene Evans
